Install a Lamp Shade Adapter

If you are interested in using the new energy efficient light bulbs, but want to use your original lamp shade, you may run into a problem. Most of the new CFL energy efficient bulbs are the mini spiral type show in the picture on the right.

The original lamp shade may not clip onto your new bulb without breaking the bulb. In this case, you have one of two options: One - use round energy efficient bulbs and change nothing. Or two - use a harp adapter to mount your original shade while using the mini spiral type bulbs.

The Simple Solution

The easiest fix, if you have not already purchased the mini spiral type bulbs, is to buy the globe type replacement bulbs made for this purpose. See the photo on the left.

Install a Harp Adapter

A more complicated approach requires some tools and a bit of skill. If you are not confident working with electrical appliances, then leave this one alone.

You will need to dis-assemble your lamp and remove the socket assembly from the base of your lamp.

Next, you will have to remove the wires from the bottom of the light bulb socket in order to pass them through the whole in the harp.

Now you can put it all back together and put your lamp shade on your new energy efficient lamp.
